Imposter Syndrome

“Moses said, ‘Please, Lord, send someone else.'”

Exodus 4:13 HCSB

“We demolish arguments and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:4b-5 HCSB

Do you suffer from imposter syndrome? Do you believe you’re pretending to be someone different than you are?

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary describes this as, “a psychological condition that is characterized by persistent doubt concerning one’s abilities or accomplishments accompanied by the fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of one’s ongoing success.”

Everyone experiences these feelings at times. We begin to believe we’re inadequate and may even ask God to send someone else to fulfill our role.

We can’t hide these thoughts from the Lord. He sees us, knows us, and loves us just the same. He knows your heart and He acknowledges your pain. He has a plan for you and will help you accomplish it. But in order to fully understand and hear from the Lord, we have to keep our minds and hearts focused on Him and His Word.

We can combat imposter syndrome through prayer, quiet time in the Scriptures, and remembering that everything we do is for His glory.

Spend time in prayer. Thank the Lord for all that He has given you. Acknowledge your weaknesses and concerns. Ask Him for His guidance, protection, and power.

Study His Word. Spend time in Scripture to find the truths of who God says you are and how He is working through you to accomplish His plans. Find Scriptures to help focus your mind on these promises and combat the negative thoughts you experience.

Do everything for His Glory. The Lord has a purpose and a plan for your life that only you are uniquely designed to fulfill. Continually ask for His direction and rely on Him for the power to complete each task you’re given. Remember His promise from 2 Corinthians 12:9 which states, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.” Others will see more of the Lord through you when you give Him the glory and admit your need for—and reliance on—Him.

Every day we have new opportunities to move closer to the Lord, to learn and grow to be more like the person He created us to be.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for loving us always. Sometimes we feel inadequate to fulfill the callings You’ve placed on our lives. We want to give our best, but we struggle with confidence. Lord, please help us remember that You have a plan for each of our lives and we can trust in You to follow through with us every step of the way. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Where are you doubting your abilities? Look to the Lord and ask Him to lead you.
