“And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.“
Ephesians 4:32 HCSB
“Show proper respect to everyone”
1 Peter 2:17a NIV
In the busyness of daily life, we can easily overlook the needs of others.
While on a writing retreat at a local restaurant, I noticed a disheveled man enter carrying a plastic tub filled with his possessions. Newspapers, a toothbrush and toothpaste, shirt, winter hat, gloves, travel pillow, blanket, and baggies of supplies were carefully inventoried on his little table.
He worked quietly, sipping his beverage and muttering to himself. He took out a package of candy and carefully retrieved one piece before returning it to his box.
When he had finished, he placed everything back into his tub. He struggled to push the lid down until both sides clicked into place.
I felt the Lord give me a gentle nudge to walk up to the manager and hand him $10. I asked him to check with the man to see if he’d like something to eat.
A few minutes later, I returned to my seat and saw a smile on the man’s face! His salad with chicken strips and bread arrived shortly. Soon after, he requested a to-go container and packed up his remaining food. With one arm around the plastic tote and the opposite hand holding his bag of food, he looked more refreshed for the journey ahead.
It can seem as though our small actions won’t make a difference. But to God, kindness is never small. It’s an act of His love working through us, making tangible the compassion we’ve received from Him. When we realize that each person has a soul and is loved by the Lord, we will begin to see them through His eyes.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for the kindness You show me every day. Please help me to share Your kindness and love with others, helping them to see their unique value. Gently guide me to see who can use a special blessing today. In Christ’s name, Amen.
Journal: Reflect on a time when someone has been kind to you. How did that change your day? Make a list of ways you could share some kindness with others this week.
