Grow Slow

“But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.”

Ephesians 4:15-16 HCSB

“I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:6 HCSB

“The righteous thrive like a palm tree and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they thrive in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age…”

Psalm 92:12-14a HCSB

We’re often in a rush…to grow up, to make changes, to finish a project, to get the big house or the nicer car, and to know everything about a subject–RIGHT NOW!

But we were not designed grow that way. We were created to grow slow.

Just as it takes years for our bodies to mature, it takes time for us to fully become who the Lord has created us to be. God designed us to call on Him, for connection and to rely on His Word and His leading each day.

We grow through deliberate and thoughtful study in communion with the Lord, establishing our roots and sprouting from there.

We’ll learn and change over time, as we go through life’s experiences and interactions with others. Through studying, reading, and testing new things we’ll figure out what works best.

And as we continually check in with our Heavenly Father, He will lovingly lead us. With our hearts firmly planted in the Lord and His teachings, we’ll grow and bear fruit even into our old age.

Let’s focus our goals on what the Lord has for us. Be patient in the process. Slow growth is still growth. And growing with the Lord will help us fulfill the good works that He has already started in us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your unique plan for each of our lives. Help us to come to You often and to rely on Your timing. Lord, we often become discouraged when the growth is slow. We want things completed our our time tables and become impatient in the waiting. Please help us remember that this slow growth is an important part of our lives. Nothing is wasted with You. Please help us to fully trust You and the process, In Christ’s name, Amen.
