Poems of the Heart

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10 NKJV

When we received our new high school yearbooks, we were given time to walk around and collect each others’ autographs. One of my friends included this short poem:

I’m no poet,
and I know it.
Just the same,
I’ll sign my name.

Though I haven’t looked at these books for many years, I still remember this poem above any other comment from that year.

Words can be beautiful and life-giving. They can convey love and connection, share information and truth, and become treasures that are hidden in our hearts. We don’t need to be poets to share a special note with someone. Our words may even be reread many times.

In Ephesians 2:10, the Greek word translated “workmanship” is poiēma, which also means “poem”. We are God’s poems, masterpieces made in His image. He has a special plan for each of our lives.

Let’s choose kindness over quickness, praise over perfection, and connection over correction. We can share what we need to, whether face to face, through texting and email, or in a handwritten form. But we must use our heart and the love we have been given by our Heavenly Father to write words that will be a blessing to those who read them. 1 Corinthians 16:14 reminds us that, “Your every action must be done with love.”

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your love and the care You give in creating each of us as unique and special poems, designed from Your heart to fulfill Your plans. We desire to have close relationships with You and those You have placed in our lives. Please help us to use our words to bless others. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Take some time to write a heartfelt note or poem to the Lord or to someone you love.
