The Bumpy Ride

“You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.”

Isaiah 26:3 HCSB

My parents are preparing for a downsizing move. As part of the plan, they’ve been dividing items into three categories: auction, donate, and keep.

The auction items were picked up this week. As the movers loaded the U-Haul, the driver mentioned how bumpy the freeway he’d taken to their house was, because of the abundance of potholes. He determined that he would drive back on a different, smoother route once all of the treasures were loaded.

The group worked tirelessly, loading the items with Tetris precision. They even loaded a cedar chest onto the shelf of a workbench to use up every space and ensure things wouldn’t shift.

After two full hours, they reached their final box. As the driver picked it up, the motion triggered a toy car full of Disney characters. Goofy, the driver, shouted out in his goofy voice, “Hold on! It’s gonna be a bumpy ride!”

The driver looked down at Goofy and said, “Don’t say that! It’s going to be a smooth ride! I’m taking a different route!”

Moments later, inspired by Goofy’s warning, he announced that he had chosen yet another route which would be even smoother!

How often are our lives like this? We make plans and try to keep things running smoothly, yet we run into difficulties. We will encounter struggles and rough roads. But the Lord will be with us along the way.

When we trust in the Lord and focus on Him and His Word, our hearts and minds can be at peace, even when our lives are unsteady.

Let’s take time daily to talk with Him and seek His guidance. When we do, we may avoid some bumpy roads. And even when we’re on one, He will help us through as we trust in Him, focused on His perfect peace.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for remaining faithful through all of life’s journeys. When changes come and the road is rough, help us to keep our minds focused and trusting in You. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: When have you experienced the bumpy roads of life? How has the Lord guided you through?
