Decorations

That light shines in the darkness,
yet the darkness did not overcome it.”

John 1:5

Let us shout for joy at your victory
and lift the banner in the name of our God.
May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.”

Psalm 20:5

“Are you ready for Christmas?” That question is repeated often during this season.

We can get enthusiastic about putting up decorations around Christmas! The beautiful lights and festive decor can boost our moods on long cold evenings. We drive around with hot chocolate and take in the lights and sounds. There are even campgrounds and parks that transform their spaces into drive-thru experiences. Others turn their homes into fantastic light shows where the lights change colors, flash, and dance to the rhythms of the music. Crowds gather to soak it all in.

In our homes, we can get just as particular about our decorations—we want the strands that encircle our trees to be equidistant apart. All the ornaments should face out and not block any others. And the topper must be perfectly straight.

It is important to remember that while we want to make the most of what we have, the real value is in remembering the humble beginnings of Christmas. There was a stable where a Child was born. That birth changed our world, our lives, our eternity.

This year, as you prepare for Christmas, enjoy the festivities. Let the children help arrange the decorations. Use the handmade ornaments they’ve created in years past. Leave an ornament a little crooked, and know that there is beauty in the season, not just the decorations.

As you take time to focus on the coming of Jesus and of the gifts He brings, take some time to drive around and take in the lights and sounds of the season. There is room for it all.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for the opportunity to remember the coming of our Savior. During the Christmas season, we long to “lift our banners” of love and appreciation for Christ by decorating and sharing our enthusiasm with others. The lights we string help brighten the long, dark nights. Please help us to hold tight to the truth that Jesus is the reason we celebrate this season.
In Christ’s name, Amen.
