Christmas Giving

“Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

2 Corinthians 9:7

“You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.”

2 Corinthians 9:11

Our church hosts a big event that starts the first Sunday in November where the congregation gets to showcase different volunteering opportunities and invite people to sign up and participate. Many are recurring projects, while some are one-time events. Others just ask for donations of items or time.

My family enjoys being involved, learning more about some of our fellow church members, and about our community at large. We purchase new items and redistribute gently used items we no longer need. This year, we created bags and boxes for several different community organizations. Some bags went to a women’s shelter, others went to international students studying in the US. Finally, some shoe boxes were shipped to children in Paraguay and Panama. These are people that we may never meet in person, but through these organizations, we can play a small part in sharing God’s love.

We especially enjoy the activities we can participate in. We volunteered at a local food pantry, loading shopping carts and restocking items for future pickups. We also helped our local homeless outreach group to prepare and package food and supplies and then deliver them to individuals in need.

These activities have opened our eyes to the great needs of those around us and have shown us that everyone can make a difference. The Lord wants us to love our neighbors and to share kindness and compassion with those we meet.

Anyone can find opportunities to volunteer. We can ask the Lord for guidance in locating a particular group or organization that could use our skills and resources. Opportunities are available throughout the year. Helping others is a way to appreciate the gifts we have been given and to show God’s love to others.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for all the gifts that You have given us. Please show us where we can make an impact on our community and the world for You.
In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Where is your heart tender for the needs of others? What gifts and skills would you like to share? Research organizations that can use your help.
