“‘In every way I’ve shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”’”
Acts 20:35
“For you were called to be free, brothers; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.”
Galatians 5:13
When my son needed treatment at a children’s hospital out of state, our family stayed in the local Ronald McDonald House. While there, we were provided a private room for a reduced rate. We were in a safe place with others going through their own health situations. Being with others in similar circumstances allowed us to feel more comfortable.
When we came home after our experience, my boys and I decided to volunteer at our Ronald McDonald House. I went through the training and my boys were able to join me. It’s amazing to see how many volunteers are needed to help keep these houses running smoothly! They prepare meals, clean rooms, and provide games and activities for the children. Some wash the laundry or make repairs around the property. Others stock the shelves and process a variety of donations.
The Lord wants us to help others. Volunteering is a great way to help others and make friends in the process. There are many ways we can volunteer. We can collect items to donate to an organization. For example, the Ronald McDonald houses collect metal pop can tabs that they recycle for cash to help pay their bills. We can also participate in fundraisers. Every little bit of help counts.
Volunteer opportunities can be found all around. Churches, food banks, animal shelters, and Ronald McDonald Houses are just a few. You can search for opportunities in your local community or ask others how they’ve chosen to get involved. Prayerfully consider ways you’d like to contribute.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for those who volunteer their time and resources. Thank you for the blessings they bring to others who can use the helping hands. Open our hearts to see the needs that we can fill. In Christ’s name, Amen.
