Counting the Days

“Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.”

Psalm 90:12 HCSB

“Don’t say to your neighbor, ‘Go away! Come back later.
I’ll give it tomorrow’—when it is there with you.”

Proverbs 3:28 HCSB

I recently saw these words on social media: “Don’t count the days. Make the days count.” This reminds me of all the times we hurriedly count down the days to get to a special event like a wedding, birth, or vacation. And what about those times when we’re eager to get past the hard stuff like a medical test or a job change? In these situations, we want to get through our days quickly, our minds are full of concern, and we lose focus on the precious moments we’ve been given.

Yet, we must remember to honor each day, to be present and valuable to those around us, and to accomplish what the Lord has put in front of us to do. In this way, each day will count.

James 4:13-15 HCSB says, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.’ You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes. Instead, you should say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.'”

We don’t know how many days we’ll have on the earth. We can make plans based on where we are, asking the Lord for His direction, but ultimately, many things are out of our control. So let’s go about our days with our eyes and hearts open to the possibilities that surround us with opportunities to share God’s goodness and love with others. Then when each day is over, we can enjoy the satisfaction of checking off the day, knowing it really mattered.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for teaching us to number our days. Each day is a gift from You. We want to use them wisely to share the blessings that You have given us. Help us to see the ways we can best use each day to Your glory. In Christ’s name, Amen.
