Friendly Escapes

“Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9 HCSB

“Oil and incense bring joy to the heart, and the sweetness of a friend is better than self-counsel.”

Proverbs 27:9 HCSB

For the first time in our 40+ year friendship, my friend Candace and I escaped for a 2-night get away! We’ve gone on many day outings over the years, but we finally gave ourselves the time, space, and resources to go a further distance and experience some new places together.

Most of our trip was spent in Ohio’s Amish country. We visited a farm that offered wagon rides with many stops allowing us to feed and learn about both common and exotic animals. The old house smelled of the yummy homemade cookies fresh out of the oven.

We searched for treasures in artisan gift shops, dined in Amish restaurants with views of the valleys, and spent time resting in the rocking chairs that lined the covered porches.

We even attended a musical with some amazing actors and singers! From our front row seats, we could not believe how talented they were as they quickly made wardrobe changes, rearranged the stage sets, and took on different voices, accents, and personalities as they changed character roles!

It was a wonderful escape from our usual days, while we still checked in with our guys at home. As we drove home, we talked about the places we will try on our next trip together.

I’m so thankful for the opportunities that God has given Candace and me to do life together! These escapes, big and small, allow us to separate from the daily difficulties of life and find new ways to celebrate our friendship and the Lord’s blessings in our lives.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the sweet rewards of friendship! May we continue to bless each other with the unique gifts we’ve been given. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Where can you find time for some friendly escapes with those you care for?
