Up from the Pit

“I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help. He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.”

Psalm 40:1-2 HCSB

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 HCSB

Some days, we fall down emotionally as well as physically. We can be going along just fine and then crash. We feel down or depressed. Our energy is limited to taking care of the necessities. When this happens, we need to step back and care for ourselves. This includes asking the Lord and others for help.

I was recently on a blood pressure medication which gradually caused depression. For two months I couldn’t think clearly. Reading and writing were difficult. I didn’t sing or call my parents as often. And I avoided outings as much as possible. I knew this wasn’t normal for me, but even then, I wasn’t aware of how deep I was in the pit.

It’s important to notice the changes in our moods and habits, so that when these times come, we can get the help we need. Though we often have these feelings, sometimes their intensity is magnified so that we become unable to see our situations with hope and truth.

When possible, focus on Lord and His promises of love and protection. We can begin by reciting the Bible verses we’ve hidden in our hearts. We can listen to the music of our favorite hymns or Christian songs. We can rest and cry with those who care for us. We can get through the dark days when we remember Who is the Light.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your presence and understanding as we experience different emotions. Thank You for loving us throughout our lives. “Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 HCSB) In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Are there areas where you or a loved one are struggling? Create a list of support people. Ask the Lord for His help as you reach out.
