Mother Mary

“The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 1:18 HCSB

“Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call His name Jesus.”

Luke 1:31 HCSB

“And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.”

Luke 1:38 ESV

Mary was a young engaged girl when she was visited by the angel telling her she would become pregnant through the Lord’s blessing and not by the traditional human ways. How confusing that must have been. Nothing had ever happened like this before and never would happen again.

How would she tell her future husband, Joseph? Would he still follow through with their marriage plans? What would her parents, family, and friends think of her? Who would believe this truth?

Yet Mary was a faithful follower who accepted the news, simply stating, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

There’s no mention of fear or trembling. No begging to have this burden taken away. No questions of why this was happening to her. She believed and was willing to follow the Lord in this situation as in every other.

Mary was willing to follow through with carrying and raising that baby boy, which was part of God’s plan to give us a Savior to provide forgiveness and salvation. We can have a blessed relationship on earth and throughout eternity with our Lord in Heaven above.

The Lord used Mary in a mighty way and He can use us, too! When He sends opportunities our way, let’s be faithful stewards, committed to His plans.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for sending us a Savior. Thank You for Mary’s example of a faithful follower as a mother and true believer in You. Please give us the willingness to follow You fully, doing whatever You have created for us to do. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: What does the Lord have for you at this time? How can you be a faithful follower?
