The Value of Time

“Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

Ephesians 5:15-17 HCSB

“Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—except the Father. Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming.”

Mark 13:32-33 HCSB

Time is constantly moving forward at a rate of 24 hours per day. That’s equivalent to 1,440 minutes or 86,400 seconds per day.

We use our time on necessities, such as sleeping, cooking, eating, working, and caring for our children. We also spend time praying, attending church, interacting with family and friends, and pursuing leisure activities. These activities are all important and serve a purpose in our lives.

We often value that time by the money we can earn or the things we can accomplish. But even more important are the ways we leave a lasting impression on the lives of those we touch.

Though we can’t go back to gain the time we have lost, we can move forward with the knowledge we’ve gained from the past and a stronger desire to use our time well.

We can begin in this moment by asking the Lord for His guidance. We have our own gifts and callings which we are to use for His glory. Focus on what you have been given to do.

We must remember to care for what we have been given. This includes our health, those whom we love and are called to minister to, and the material items that we use.

None of us knows how much time we’ve been given or when the Lord may return to take us home. Let’s live each moment full of faith, trusting in Him, and giving our best to those around us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your involvement in our lives. We long to follow your plans for how we spend our time. “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Psalms 90:12) Please help us to do the work You have for us while we are here on earth. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Keep a log of your time spent today. Where are you using your time wisely and for the Lord? Are there areas where you may be able to adjust your activities to those you value most?
