Sun and Moon

“Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you shining stars.”

Psalm 148:3 HCSB

“When you look to the heavens and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the array of heaven—do not be led astray to bow down and worship them. The LORD your God has provided them for all people everywhere under heaven.”

Deuteronomy 4:19 HCSB

Tomorrow, there will be an eclipse over parts of the United States as the moon crosses over the sun. There will be totality in some locations lasting over 4 minutes!

People have been planning for this event for years, and some are traveling great distances to be in the perfect viewing location. Many schools will be closed and watch parties are scheduled at various places. Proper viewing glasses have been procured to ensure eye health.

While we prepare to watch this amazing event, let’s remember the Creator Who will make it happen!

The Lord created the sun and moon to give us light for day and night. He set the sun in position to provide the exact temperatures to sustain human life and to provide energy for plants to grow. He situated the moon to direct the tides. He is worthy of all the praise!

His power is evident throughout all of Scripture. Joshua 10:12-13 states, “On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ And the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance on its enemies… So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting almost a full day. There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the Lord fought for Israel.”

And Isaiah 30:26 tells us that, in the Lord’s time, “The moonlight will be as bright as the sunlight, and the sunlight will be seven times brighter—like the light of seven days—on the day that the LORD bandages His people’s injuries and heals the wounds He inflicted.”

Let’s celebrate the unique opportunities to see God’s creation and remember His greatness which surpasses them all.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your mighty works and help us to remember that all things happen in Your time. As we read in Isaiah 60:19-20, “The sun will no longer be your light by day, and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your splendor. Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will not fade; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will be over.” We look forward to the day when we will be in Your presence forever! In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: Take some time to thank the Lord for His creations. Remember His daily provision of the sun and moon and His awesome power to command them for His glory. Rest in the truth that He is our everlasting light.
