Comparing Apples

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control.”

Galatians 5:22-23a HCSB

“But each person should examine his own work, and then he will have a reason for boasting in himself alone, and not in respect to someone else.”

Galatians 6:4 HCSB

“Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.”

1 Corinthians 11:1 HCSB

The saying goes, “You can’t compare apples to oranges.” But you can’t really compare apples to apples either.

A quick Google search will show there are somewhere between 7,000 and 30,000 different types of apples worldwide. 2,000 types are grown in America. They are different in color, texture, and taste. They grow in different climates with varying needs. Some have a longer shelf life than others.

The Lord has created a world full of beauty and variety.

He did the same with humans. Though we may say, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, even children who are born into the same family have their own unique set of DNA, fingerprints, physical attributes, preferences, and spiritual gifts to share with the world.

We should not compare one person against another. We are all created uniquely with special gifts to share.

Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we can consider how we’ve changed over time. Are we getting closer to the Lord? Are we improving in the fruits of the Spirit? Are we using what we are learning to positively affect the lives of others?

The Lord looks at each of us as His child. He has a plan for our lives. He accepts us, flaws and all. And He doesn’t compare us to anyone else. We shouldn’t either.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for blessing us with Your abundant creations! Please help us to value the unique differences of others without comparing them to ourselves. Instead, help us to be the best versions of ourselves as we learn to imitate Christ. (1 Cor. 11:1) In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journal: What is your favorite apple? Why not eat one this week and spend time with the Lord thanking Him for His bountiful creation! Thank Him for the individuality He created in you and those you love. If you’re feeling adventurous, pick up a couple types of apples to try with a friend and savor the differences of each of them.
