“Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.'”
Luke 9:23 HCSB
“Then Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.'”
John 8:12 HCSB
It’s never been easier to follow someone. With social media inviting us to follow influencers and “experts”, we’re encouraged to chase the newest idea, the quickest solution, or the latest promise of success. We can easily access information with the simple tap of a button or a voice command.
I’ll admit, I can get caught up in this too. Whether it’s the newest writing strategy, the latest home remedy, or the healthiest, quickest, or tastiest recipe, we hope it will be the answer. Then I remember that the internet and its “knowledge” has only existed for a tiny blip in time.
There’s another invitation apart from all those voices. It’s the gentle reminder of Jesus saying, “Follow Me.” The truth is we’re called to follow Him. Before the world even existed, Jesus was, and He will always be. We were created by God and redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ.
This isn’t just for when times are tough or we lose our way. We’re called to walk with Him faithfully every day.
By spending quiet time with the Lord daily in the Bible and in prayer, we can tune out the world’s competing voices so we can hear His. The closer we walk with Jesus, the more confidently we’ll recognize His direction and experience the peace that comes from following the One who never leads us astray.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for being our Light and the One we can confidently follow while in this world. Please help us to trust in You with all our hearts, and not rely on our own understanding, but to think about You in all our ways, knowing You will guide us on the right paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). In Christ’s name, Amen.
